Chinatown
Saturday, September 11, 2010 || 12:03 AM

Year 1 Semester 1, we had an assignment. Everybody had to choose one place of interest in Singapore to take picture at. I chose Chinatown. I chose Chinatown because it is one of the place that is always buzzing with life even though it is a place where teenagers seldom hang out, even though it is not a place of trends but a place full of culture. I think that it is important for the young generation to be knowledgeable about their own culture, to learn about the past and appreciate the present.

During my photo-taking, I learnt not only about photography but also more about the place. I learnt how to compose my pictures more and vary the shutter speed to emphasize on the crowd. I learnt that in photography, things cannot be rushed into. Sometimes we have to wait, wait for something or someone to walk into the frame and that alone can add a hundred more or even more words into a picture. Last but not least, I learnt that it is not only a place of culture but also a place where the older generation hang out and find joy in the simplest things in life.

Singapore Botanic Garden

Year 1 Semester 1, we had a field trip to the Singapore Botanic Garden and below are my five best photographs that I have captured. Indeed they are not of the very best and I am sure that in these photos, there are certain things that I can further improve on which I will continue to work on.

During this field trip, I learnt and get to practice more about controlling the exposure because the lighting varies from one place to another as there are times the cloud hovers across the sunlight. I also learnt more about composition as when we are outdoors, often there are many more things around us and your framing gets messy and I will have to learn how to composite well in order to take a good picture.

Personally, I especially like the macro function. I like how it magnifies the small things in life. I like how clearly it portrays all the small things that we often neglect. I want to take pictures. I want to show people things that they do not often see. I want to show people a beautiful side of everything, good or bad. I want to take a picture that speaks a thousand words.
